The resurgence of interest in Hip Flask, largely due to the involvement of Grant Alan and Brian Bolland, quickly traveled back across the Atlantic. Upon the release of the HIP FLASK feature film, Furst established Active Images Productions on the West Coast so that the HIP FLASK license might be more effectively administered. Jeph Loeb, who had written and produced the blockbuster hit movies COMMANDO and TEEN WOLF was anxious to get involved in the further adventures of Hip Flask.

"After working with Michael J. Fox and Arnold Schwarzenegger, there were obvious career choices that had to be made. Spielberg was calling, of course, and Lucas had made some overtures, but nothing they offered gave me the emotional resonance I was looking for. And while I had never before ventured into the world of comic books, what better way then to start at the top? I brought the story of THE LONG HOT SUMMER to Active Images and set to work. The scripting alone absorbed me for the best part of a year, and when Tim Sale took my story away, he truly brought it to life. He has my undying gratitude for that. Winning the Eisner and the Harvey later that year was the icing on the cake."
