Joe Madureira's TIME RAIDERS lifted Hip Flask out of Mystery City and threw him into a science fantasy universe very much familiar to young audiences raised on PlayStation and Nintendo. Madureira would further elaborate on these themes a year later when he launched his own BATTLE CHASERS book.

"WOW. What else can I say about my run on Hip Flask, but WOW! A lot of people enjoyed my work at Marvel a few years back, but I believe it was my Hip Flask work that really launched my career. It was on this book that I developed my style, which many now refer to as 'animanga' (due to my decidedly japanese approach to drawing animals). It was a big hit with the fans, and they were screaming for more! This excitement carried over into all of the projects that followed. With the wonderful success I've had on Battle Chasers, sometimes I have to take a moment, gaze with misty eyes up to the heavens, and salute the big guy, 'Flask, old buddy, I owe it all to you!'"
