"Awarded for the highest form of excellence in all of comics
over the last year - this is the pinnacle of the industry in 2008. The Elephantmen: War Toys miniseries from Image was, quite simply the most effective work of 2008.
Writer Richard Starkings and
artist Moritat worked in perfect sync to craft this hauntingly
disturbing (and hauntingly beautiful) war story. The detached narration and gruesomely detailed artwork gave this
series, which follows the vicious war that first saw the titular
Elephantmen unleashed, a documentary or news reel style that was
incredibly effective in drumming up both the beauty of the
storytelling and horror of the content. It was part existentialist
survival horror, part Saving Private Ryan-style "war porn," part
cautionary tale, and all awesome.
In terms of overall craft, design, innovation, and enjoy-ability,
no single issue, ongoing title, or other miniseries could match
Elephantmen: War Toys. With the ongoing title now back on schedule,
look for the Elephantmen franchise to be formidable again 2009.
In the mean time, do no miss out on Elephantmen: War Toys as this
miniseries reminded us what comics are capable of and raised the
bar for every other book in 2008."
